TOUR DESCRIPTION
In this tour we will walk around the medieval town of Santillana del Mar at sunset, the perfect setting to start our disturbing tour.
We will visit there the Museum of the Inquisition. This visit will be like going back in time to what may have been the darkest time in Spain, where the human being demonstrated the best of his engineering and the worst of his soul. We will immerse ourselves in the history of this cruel and disturbing period, likewise, we will reveal the operation of the most used torture methods in Europe.
Our other haunting stop will be late at night, but this time in Pontejos. There we will visit the environment wherein 1834 a complex was built for the treatment of patients with tuberculosis, leprosy, and plague. Over time this place would become a lazaretto, a quarantine and healing center for crews infected with tropical diseases from the Americas, and which in 1914 would eventually also host people with mental disorders.
This complex dedicated to recovery ceased its activity in 1989 and it is currently in state of ruin. For the safety of all the members of the tour, this visit will be made around the centers and not inside, as these is risk of collapse of the buildings.
During the walk, we will enjoy the views of Santander on the horizon, while we feel the solitude of the night and the dense atmosphere of a place with so much history.

GEOPARQUE COSTA QUEBRADA
Reconocido como Geoparque Mundial de la UNESCO, constituye uno de los enclaves geológicos y paisajísticos más singulares del litoral cantábrico. Su territorio se caracteriza por una espectacular sucesión de acantilados, playas, islotes, tómbolos, sistemas dunares y formaciones rocosas que permiten interpretar, de forma visual y accesible, la evolución geológica de la costa a lo largo de millones de años.
La acción combinada del mar, el viento, la lluvia y los movimientos tectónicos ha modelado un paisaje de gran belleza, donde los estratos inclinados, los pliegues y las plataformas de abrasión marina muestran la historia natural escrita en la roca. Esta riqueza costera se prolonga hacia el interior mediante un relieve de valles, laderas y paisajes kársticos, donde el agua ha disuelto y esculpido la roca caliza, dando lugar a cuevas, simas, dolinas —hundimientos del terreno— y otras formas propias del modelado kárstico.
Además de su extraordinario valor geológico, este espacio alberga una notable biodiversidad asociada a los ecosistemas costeros, dunares, fluviales y kársticos. La variedad de ambientes favorece la presencia de flora y fauna adaptada a condiciones muy diversas, convirtiendo el geoparque en un lugar de especial interés para la conservación, la divulgación científica y el disfrute responsable de la naturaleza.
El Geoparque Costa Quebrada ofrece, por tanto, múltiples oportunidades para el desarrollo de actividades de turismo activo y educativo, como rutas guiadas, senderismo interpretativo, educación ambiental, observación del paisaje, fotografía de naturaleza e interpretación geológica. Todo ello lo convierte en un entorno único para comprender la relación entre geología, paisaje, biodiversidad y cultura local.
