DESCRIPTION OF THE VISIT
At the agreed time, we will meet our guide in front of the town's Tourist Office, beginning a fascinating guided tour of this charming seaside village, famous for its vibrant summer atmosphere and exquisite gastronomy.
We'll begin our walking tour along the picturesque seafront promenade, where we can enjoy breathtaking views of the marshes, a place where the fresh waters of the Escudo and Garandilla rivers meet the salt waters of the Cantabrian Sea. This natural spectacle, which changes with the tides, is a feast for the senses. In the distance rises the majestic Maza Bridge , a 15th-century structure that remains almost intact and serves as one of the main access points to San Vicente.
We will continue our adventure to the historic center , where we will visit the 13th-century King's Castle , perched atop a hill and surrounded by a wide moat. This is a must-see for anyone wishing to delve into the history and origins of the town. We will enter the old town through one of the remaining gates of its ancient wall. To one side, we will find the Presbyter's Tower , an old tower that belonged to the town's tax collector, and opposite it, the current Town Hall, known as the Corro Palace , which was the residence of the most influential man of the time.
Upon reaching the top of Calle Alta, we will find the ruins of the Hospital de la Concepción, which once served as a hostel for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela and the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana. At the highest point of the historic center, we will visit the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, a Gothic temple commissioned by King Alfonso VII, which forms part of the town's fortifications. Inside, an impressive Renaissance mausoleum stands out.
Before descending Calle Alta towards the Puente de la Barquera, we'll take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views from this viewpoint, overlooking the estuary, the green meadows, and the majestic peaks of the Picos de Europa.
