TOUR DESCRIPTION
On this morning excursion, you will explore Comillas, the only modernist city in Cantabria. You’ll be fascinated by the city’s rich history, which is deeply tied to Antonio López y López, the first Marquis of Comillas, who was the key figure behind many of the city's most iconic landmarks.
Our first stop will be at the Old Major Seminary (formerly the University of Comillas). This impressive building, designed by Catalan architects Joan Martorell and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, showcases a blend of architectural styles, including modernism. Perched atop a hill, the Seminary offers stunning views of Comillas, with a particular focus on the nearby Palace of Sobrellano.
Next, we will visit Villa Quijano, better known as Capricho de Gaudí, for a guided tour. This villa, one of Antonio Gaudí’s earliest works, was built in 1885 for Máximo Díaz de Quijano, a Cantabrian lawyer. Inspired by sunflowers and music, El Capricho is not only a key example of modernist architecture but also one of the few Gaudí creations outside of Catalonia, marking the beginning of the modernist movement.
Before returning, we will take a scenic drive through Comillas to admire some of the city's most emblematic sites, including the old cemetery, the port, and Comillas beach.
