TOUR DESCRIPTION

On this morning excursion you will get to know Comillas, the only modernist city in Cantabria. You will be surprised to know the fascinating history that unites Comillas with Antonio López y López, the first Marquis of Comillas and the true promoter of the main unique elements of the city.

Our first stop will be for you to visit the Old Major Seminary (and old University of Comillas). This impressive building designed by the Catalan architects Joan Martorell and Lluís Domenech i Montaner is a mix of different architectural trends, including modernism. Located at the top of a hill, from the Seminary we will also have magnificent views over Comillas and in particular, over the Palace of Sobrellano.

Next, we will go to Villa Quijano, commonly known as “Capricho de Gaudí” to participate in a guided tour. "El Capricho", as it is also known, is inspired by sunflowers and music. This villa is one of the first works of the famous Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí and was built by order of the Cantabrian lawyer Máximo Díaz de Quijano in 1885. The importance of this work lies in the fact that it marks the beginning of the modernist movement, as well as being one of the few works that Gaudí carried out outside of Catalonia.

Before starting our return trip, we will take the opportunity to take a short scenic-drive tour to see some of the most emblematic places of this city, such as the old cemetery, the port or the Comillas beach.

To complete this intense excursion, we will make a short stop on our way back to visit the Sequoya Forest of Cabezón de la Sal. You will love visiting this small forest of just 2 hectares and its impressive trees over 40m high.
